For more than 20 years, the NALC has conducted an annual nationwide food drive on the second Saturday in May. Using the unparalleled postal networks, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes. It is held in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.

“The Burbank Temporary Aid Center, known as BTAC, presented Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center with Burbank’s Top Award for Citizenship at its 12th annual gala fundraiser held at the Castaway Restaurant and Special Events Center on March 6.

Always well-attended by local dignitaries and representatives from Burbank’s governmental, business, media and nonprofit factions, this annual event, which honors a Burbank company, organization or individual who has shown dedication to bettering the community, also serves as BTAC’s premier fundraiser.

Welcomed by Barbara Howell, BTAC’s chief executive, and the organization’s chairman of the board, Ron Sorensen, who also serves as the director of the Providence Center for Community Health Improvement for Providence Health and Services, attendees enjoyed the evening’s program emceed by Gary Olson, president of the Burbank Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s gala, co-chaired by Nancy Gams Korb, a member of the Brad Korb Team of RE/MAX In Action Realtors, and Alethia Calagias, who oversees community relations for the Logix Federal Credit Union, was made possible by the event committee composed of Susan Borders, Dee Call, Kimberley Clark, Benjamin Dennis, Darryl Forbes, Jessa Freemyer, Angie Gonzalez, Maddy Horne, Courtney Korb, Silvia Mancini, Teri Suarez, Lauri Veverka and Vicki Williams.

Burbank Temporary Aid Center to expand following planning board approval

The Burbank Temporary Aid Center will move forward with plans to expand its operation into a commercial building next door after receiving the unanimous green light on the proposal from the Burbank Planning Board on Monday.The nonprofit, which annually serves 300 homeless people and 3,000 low-income Burbank households, will use the building at 1308 W. Burbank Blvd., which used to house a post-production company, to create food storage pantries, two offices and a laundry room.Operators said with the expansion, they’ll be serving the same number of clients with some much-needed elbow room. In the center’s current facility, food bins are reportedly stacked 9 feet above ground, and clients often spill out of the lobby and must stand outside while waiting to be seen.

3rd – 26th: Burbank City Federal Credit Union is conducting a food drive. Look for the BTAC bins in the lobby!

3rd – 20th: Horace Mann Child Care Center is conducting a food drive.

6th – 7th: Burbank vs. Burroughs football games and food drives for BTAC. JV plays on the 6th, and Varsity on the 7th. This is more than a hometown rivalry! BTAC will be the real winner when those cheering on their favorite teams bring canned goods to donate to BTAC.

8th: American Lutheran Church is gathering items for Goodwill. But your donation will help raise money for BTAC, too! So, go through your closets and share all of those ‘treasures’ you no longer need. 755 N. Whitnall Highway.
8th – 15th: Scouting for Food (Boy Scouts). Scouts distribute bags on the 8th. Then leave food on your doorstep for the Scouts to pick up on the 15th.

13th: Burbank Chamber of Commerce is asking those attending their November Luncheon to bring canned goods and holiday foods for BTAC.

18th: Thanks ‘fore’ Giving: Women’s Golf Association of Lakeside Golf Club will collect hygiene items, new men’s socks and underwear for BTAC.

19th: Annual delivery of turkeys from Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus and their elves (aka Brad and Nancy Korb and the Brad Korb Team!)
21st: Holiday in the Park will incorporate a food drive for BTAC. So bring a donation and support BTAC, while you kick-off the holiday season at the Holiday in the Park Festivities! Holiday foods are especially needed at this time of year.
21st: Leadership Burbank Thanksgiving Dinner & Leadership Discussion at Tony’s Bella Vista. Cost is $20, plus a new book for BTAC to give to a teen/tween for Christmas. This would be a great way to learn more about Leadership Burbank, while supporting BTAC.

21st: Nickelodeon Thanksgiving Lunch and Food Drive Competition. Shows compete to see which can collect the most food for BTAC!

23rd: Interfaith Thanksgiving Service: 7 p.m. at American Lutheran Church (Hollywood Way & Clark). This is a wonderful start to the holiday season for everyone. Bring your family or a friend, as well as donation for BTAC.

Continuing through Christmas

  • Barnes and Noble Book Drive, beginning right after Thanksgiving and running through Christmas, donate a book to make a child’s holiday much brighter.
  • Born Free Cycles: Toy Drive
  • Burbank Fire Department’s Spark of Love Toy/Gift collection
  • Entertainment Partners/Central Casting Food Drive: Team Peanut Butter vs. Team Jelly
  • Olive Auto Center, $30 service for a $30 donation to BTAC
  • Warner Bros. Food and Toy Drive
